Product Review: Levi Roots Reggae Reggae BBQ Jerk Sauce.

In this review we’ll take a closer look at the Reggae Reggae brand by Levi Roots in our test kitchen. The Reggae Reggae brand took Britain by storm after Levi Roots appeared on the Dragon’s Den and he became affectionately known as the “Dragon Slayer”.  I was quite surprised to find the Reggae Reggae Jerk BBQ sauce being sold in one of the grocery stores we frequent, so I thought I’d allow a bottle to come home with me, with the intention that it would be involved in dinner this night.

I tried my best to not over-season the chicken as to not overwhelm or taint the flavors of the reggae reggae sauce that I would be using to finish off the dish. Basically all I did was to trim the fat and excess skin off the chicken legs (keep the skin on to help prevent the chicken from going overly dry during roasting), then I layered some onion, celery, carrot and scallions on a roasting tray (lined with tin foil to make cleaning up after easy). I then placed the chicken pieces on top of the vegetables and topped it (do remember to pat dry) with fresh black pepper, sea salt, thyme and a quick drizzle of olive oil and into a preheated 375F oven.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I’d give this reggae reggae sauce a 6.5 or so. I found that I had to search deep to really identify the spices and “kick” you’d expect from a ‘jerk’ bbq sauce. It’s somewhat sweet and in all honesty I think it would be better suited as a dipping sauce and not necessarily a sauce to baste chicken in the oven as I did. BUT.. maybe the goal of the sauce is to appeal to taste buds which are accustomed to tamed flavors and to be used as an introduction to Caribbean heat?
