Dinner At Spring Sushi, A Review.
“Ah tell yuh fadda we should try that ‘shoe-she’ place up the street!” We were sitting in my parents kitchen on Christmas day after a captivating dinner, enjoying the company of the old folks, my daughters and sister who was visiting from the Caribbean, when the “talk” about dining out came up. Mom and Dad are old school Caribbean people, but not as conservative as most of the folks from their generation. Seniors, who still navigate Toronto via the subway system and without the use of a GPS or smart phone. I say ‘not as conservative” as most Caribbean people would be turned off by even the thought of dining on raw fish (as I mentioned in the Pokeh review).
My limited Sushi experience is heavily influenced by this Caribbean way of wanting all our fish and meats cooked WELL DONE! Tehya on the other hand is somewhat of a Sushi connoisseur in training, so she would be our guide for the night as we embarked on testing the all-you-can eat menu at Spring Sushi.

We had 7 pm reservations and luckily we did, as the restaurant was packed and there was a constant flow of diners coming in and out. While I found the overall interior to be somewhat minimalist, one could not help but be captivated by the aromas, the laughter and general chatter at tables we passed, and the sweeping energy of this dinner-time rush! Everyone seemed to be having a great time.
Observations.
- I recommend making reservations
- Very clean, bright and excellent service (I like judging service on busy nights and they excelled)
- You order via and iPad system, which is very simple to use and the staff are there to run through the basics with you.
- Drinks are not included in the all-you-can eat pricing
- The food is fresh and quite appealing on the plates (get your Instagram game on)
- Pace yourself and don’t try to order everything at once. Try 1 order of something and you can then order more if it’s to your liking
- It’s MORE than just Sushi.. a comprehensive Japanese menu and Thai and offerings. Basically something for everyone!
- There is an a la carte take out menu
- Yes, you have starters, mains and desserts covered (get the mango ice cream)
- The grilled sirloin steak is done “medium” (excellent), not sure if you can ask for well done
- Though the restaurant was crowded you never felt the invasion of personal space nor were we encroached by what was going on on the other tables
- We recommend the Salmon and Surf Clam Sashimi and the Sirloin Steak Teppanyaki
- According to Indy, you MUST get the Deep Fried Chicken Cutlets!
- Some items are large enough for 2-3 people, while others are single servings (the menu will have that stated)
- Ask for forks if chop sticks are not your thing.. like me!
- As mentioned above, don’t order everything at once (you have the iPad during the dining experience) as you will find that it will go cold on you
- With the high turnover of diners, you’re getting freshly made and fresh (bearing in mind we’re no-where close to an ocean) fish and seafood
Since most of the non Sushi items are prepared with delightful sauces or comes with accompanying dips, I would recommend getting the mango salad. I found that by eating a couple pieces of the mango between each dish, helped to cleanse my palette and thus enjoy everything individually. Or after a while you’ll find everything will start tasting the same.
I now invite you to watch the video, to really get some insight into dining at Spring sushi! With bellies overflowing we quite enjoyed our night out at Spring Sushi. And though Indy didn’t touch any Sushi and I’m still trying to find a way to like “rolls”, I’m now a HUGE fan of Sashimi and Teppanyaki!
So you’re probably wondering what did mom mean with “Ah tell yuh fadda we should try that ‘shoe-she’ place up the street!”.. basically she’s saying that she told dad that they should try the sushi restaurant up the street from where they live. With her accent and the notorious manner in which Trinbagonians (it may be a Caribbean thing) butcher words, it went from Sushi to shoe-she! Gotta luv it!
