Toronto Junior Carnival #Gallivanting.

While I grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, the home of what is arguably the MECCA of Carnival, I never played mas as a kid. It was more of a spectator sport for us, as dad would take us to San Fernando (2nd largest city on the islands)  every Carnival Tuesday to take in the sights and sounds. I still remember being in the beautiful Caribbean sun, sipping on a freshly shaved snow cone with guava syrup leaking down my hands, as colorful revelers danced away to the booming Soca emanating from the dj trucks in front of us.

This year it was such a pleasure to see a new generation of masqueraders in stunning costumes, under a blistering Canadian sun, carry on our culture and tradition. It was my first time attending the annual Toronto Junior Carnival (usually held a couple weeks before the grand parade on the Lakeshore) and as I made my way though the crowds there was a permanent smile on my face. Brought about by much pride and knowledge that my culture was alive and healthy!

Jul 16, 2016 – 10.00am-8.00pm

The Junior Carnival and Family Day event provides its audience and the surrounding community of Malvern the opportunity to experience the cultural presentation of young performers as they participate in their earlier years. This event engages the three stakeholder groups: Toronto Mas Bands Association, Organization of Calypso Performing Artists, and the Ontario Steelpan Association. This family event is being presented to allow young people to participate as producers, performers, and presenters. The Junior Carnival and Family Day event continues to be supported by the Children’s Breakfast Club and the Metropolitan Toronto Police Services.
